Two suppliers can both offer 1.2379 (DIN 1.2379) and deliver material with very different behaviour in service. The grade name sets the composition; the melting route, the hot working and the inspection decide the performance.

Quality parameters that matter

a high carbon high chromium grade with about 12 percent chromium and 1.5 percent carbon that provides excellent wear resistance in blanking and forming. These are the characteristics to verify with measured values rather than statements of compliance, because a certificate that simply repeats the standard says nothing about the actual heat.

Melting and refining route

For cold forming and roll tooling, the refining route is worth specifying explicitly. Vacuum degassing controls hydrogen and oxygen; electroslag remelting controls inclusions and segregation. Both are recorded on a proper mill certificate.

Testing and certificates

Ask for the carbide segregation rating and the amount of hot reduction. Wear resistance is limited by carbide quality, and poorly worked material chips even at the correct hardness. The certificate should identify the heat number, the test position and the method used for each result.

Packing and logistics

Long sections need support so that they do not sag, and machined surfaces need protection from rust and mechanical damage. Every bundle should carry the heat number and the order reference so that the material can be traced after arrival.
