Quality parameters that matter
a 420 type martensitic stainless steel with about 13 percent chromium that takes a very high polish and resists water and polymer attack. These are the characteristics to verify with measured values rather than statements of compliance, because a certificate that simply repeats the standard says nothing about the actual heat.
Melting and refining route
For lenses and light guides, the refining route is worth specifying explicitly. Vacuum degassing controls hydrogen and oxygen; electroslag remelting controls inclusions and segregation. Both are recorded on a proper mill certificate.
Testing and certificates
Insist on ESR or vacuum melting for optical work, because inclusions are what show up as comet tails on a polished surface. Ask for the inclusion rating and the polishability test result. The certificate should identify the heat number, the test position and the method used for each result.
Packing and logistics
Long sections need support so that they do not sag, and machined surfaces need protection from rust and mechanical damage. Every bundle should carry the heat number and the order reference so that the material can be traced after arrival.
