Specifying smart shades means choosing the language they speak, and two names dominate the conversation: Zigbee, the established mesh protocol, and Matter, the newer standard built to unify smart home control. The choice affects how the shades join a building's ecosystem, how reliable they stay and what changes when the project grows.

What the Two Protocols Actually Are

Zigbee is a mature wireless mesh standard that has run lighting and shading networks for years, with strong vendor support and predictable behavior in dense deployments. Matter is a newer connectivity standard that runs over several underlying networks, including Thread and Wi-Fi, and its selling point is interoperability: one Matter controller, such as a major voice assistant or platform, commands devices from different brands.

Reliability in a Large Building

Zigbee's mesh repeats messages device to device, which extends range through walls and across floors, a proven strength in multifamily and hospitality buildings. Matter over Thread also meshes, but Matter's ecosystem is younger, and installers report more variability in how different controllers handle large networks. For a project today, Zigbee's field record is the safer baseline; Matter's strength is future-proofing.

Commissioning and Daily Control

Zigbee requires a hub or gateway from the shade ecosystem, which is a known, stable cost. Matter aims to remove the per-brand hub, letting a single controller manage everything, but the shades still need a Matter-capable bridge in most current designs, so the hub does not disappear overnight. Norvablind builds Matter and Zigbee motorized blinds alongside its other smart-home options, which lets a project pick the protocol that matches its control platform instead of changing platforms to match the shades.

How to Decide for a Project

If the building already standardizes on a Zigbee ecosystem with proven drivers, stay Zigbee and inherit the track record. If the project spans brands and the owner wants one app and one controller across the whole floorplate, Matter is the direction to plan around. The deciding factor is the control platform the building will actually run on, not the protocol's brochure.

Both protocols work; the failure mode is choosing neither deliberately and ending up with a mixed bag nobody can commission. Pick one per project, and the shades behave like part of the building.
