Mining wastewater is punishing for settling equipment: high suspended solids, abrasive fines, and flows that swing with the shift schedule. A lamella clarifier for mining wastewater packs a large settling area into a small footprint by stacking inclined plates, which suits mine sites where space and flat ground are scarce. Making one work on mine water depends on sizing for the real solids load and getting the reagent dosing right.
Sizing for Mining Solids Loads
The design starts with the solids flux, not just the hydraulic flow. Mine streams commonly carry 1,000-10,000 mg/L of suspended solids, and the plate area must match the worst operating case rather than the daily average. Surface loading rates for lamella units run higher than for conventional basins, but they should be derated when fines are slow-settling or when flow peaks arrive together with high solids. A margin for shift-start surges prevents the classic failure of overloaded plates.
Plate Geometry and Sludge Handling
Plate spacing of 40-60 mm and an inclination of 50-60 degrees are typical starting points. In mine water the fines are abrasive and settle into a dense, sticky sludge, so hoppers need steep walls and reliable removal: scrapers or frequent flushing, with the underflow pumped to tailings thickening. Sludge left between plates cuts effective settling area and adds dead load, so draw-off should be continuous or on a short timer rather than once per shift.
Coagulant and Flocculant Dosing Notes
Most mining waters need chemical conditioning before lamella settling. A coagulant or pH adjustment step collapses the charge on fine particles, and a polymer flocculant then builds flocs heavy enough to settle. Jar testing on the actual process water sets both doses; skip it and the site inherits guessing. Overdosed polymer makes sticky flocs that cling to plates and resist washing, while underdosing lets fines carry over. Inject the coagulant at rapid mix and the flocculant afterwards with gentle mixing, and keep the flocculant solution fresh, since aged polymer loses effectiveness.
When a High-Density Stage Makes Sense
Where the solids load is extreme or the underflow must leave thick, a high-density clarifier variant adds internal sludge recirculation and a thickening zone. It raises effective loading rates and produces denser underflow, which reduces the load on downstream thickeners and often trims polymer demand. The trade-off is higher capital cost and more instrumentation, so the choice usually follows the solids concentration curve, not preference.
For mine sites the safest route is pilot or jar testing on real process water before fixing the design. Suppliers that can run standard and high-density clarifiers from one design base simplify that step. YAOTONG manufactures lamella and high-density clarification equipment for industrial duty, founded in 2007 with 73 patents and installations in more than 30 countries.
