Selecting 1.2343 for hot forging dies is a decision about failure modes. Every tool and every component fails in a particular way, and the steel should be chosen to resist that specific mechanism rather than to maximise a property that does not matter.
The service conditions
hot forging dies typically involves a combination of mechanical load, abrasion and temperature cycling. The dominant mechanism decides whether wear resistance, toughness or thermal stability should lead the specification.
Why this grade fits
1.2343 is specified because a lower vanadium version of the H11 family that trades some wear resistance for noticeably better toughness and resistance to heat checking. In practice it is supplied hardened and tempered to 44 to 48 HRC, which is the condition in which the property balance was designed to work.
Where it is not the best choice
If the part is lightly loaded and made in large numbers, a lower cost steel will usually give the same service life. If the part is aluminium extrusion tooling under extreme conditions, a remelted or higher alloyed grade may be justified.
Design and machining notes
Radii, fillets and generous transitions reduce stress concentration and are free. Sharp internal corners are the most common cause of premature cracking in mandrels and piercing tools, and no steel specification can compensate for them.
Life cycle cost
Compare the cost of the steel against the cost of the downtime, not against the cost of a cheaper grade. For hot forging dies the material is usually a small fraction of the total cost of a failure.
Hubei Keyspark Special Steel Co., Ltd. runs two 20-ton EAF furnaces, two 20-ton LF ladle furnaces, a 20-ton VD unit and a 5-ton ESR furnace, with open-die forging, 12 precision heat treatment furnaces, four vacuum annealing furnaces and over twenty machining centres. Annual capacity is about 15,000 tonnes.
