Precision punches, gauges and blanking dies need more than high hardness. They must hold size after heat treatment and retain their working geometry through repeated cycles. Buyers considering Cr12Mo1V1 tool steel dimensional stability should connect material cleanliness, rough-machining practice and tempering strategy to the final tolerance requirement.

Understand the grade family

Cr12Mo1V1 is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work tool steel produced to the Chinese GB standard. It is commonly compared with AISI D2, DIN 1.2379 and JIS SKD11. These cross-references make international communication easier, but the purchase order should name the standard that controls chemistry, delivery hardness and acceptance testing.

The Keyspark page describes strong wear resistance, deep hardenability and good dimensional stability, with molybdenum and vanadium supporting secondary hardening and grain control. Typical uses include blanking and forming dies, thread-rolling tools, shear blades, powder-compaction tooling and wear-resistant gauges.

Build stability into the process

Distortion starts before heat treatment. Uneven stock removal, residual forging stress, sharp internal corners and inconsistent machining allowance can cause movement during hardening. Begin with a straight, verified block or bar; rough machine symmetrically where possible; then stress relieve before finishing the heat-treatment allowance.

During hardening, staged preheating reduces thermal shock. The official product guidance recommends prompt tempering and multiple tempers for improved stability. Cryogenic treatment may be considered when retained austenite must be minimized, but it should be part of a controlled route rather than added casually after dimensions have already been fixed.

EDM work also needs planning. Removing the recast layer and applying a suitable stress-relief treatment can lower the risk of fine surface cracks. Grinding should use correct wheel selection and adequate cooling, because grinding burn can shorten tool life even when the bulk hardness is correct.

Define what the certificate must prove

A purchase specification should include grade, standard, shape, dimensions, annealed hardness, surface condition, machining allowance and ultrasonic-testing level. For critical tooling, request heat traceability, chemical analysis, hardness results and any agreed microstructure or carbide-distribution review. Specify where test samples are taken from large sections.

Keyspark lists round bar, flat bar, square bar and custom machining options for Cr12Mo1V1, along with MTC documentation and full-process inspection. Providing the finished application, desired service hardness and tolerance-critical areas gives the supplier and heat treater enough context to propose a suitable production route.

The practical goal is not merely a hard die. It is a die that reaches the required hardness without unexpected movement and continues to hold the dimensions that matter in production.
